Ashley Announces Growth Plan for its Arcadia and Whitehall Facilities
  • Ashley is not reducing its Wisconsin work force, in fact it is trying to find ways to increase Wisconsin jobs.
  • Ashley used a very conservative job protection number in the proposal to WEDC to protect the company against future unexpected economic downturns.
  • Ashley has added 425 Wisconsin jobs since January, 2012.
  • Ashley has opportunities for people to work in its Wisconsin operations and is looking for employees.
  • Ashley is growing.
    • In 2014, Ashley expects to grow its business by 7%.
    • Ashley is working on an expansion of its Whitehall facility. This will be the second expansion in two (2) years.
    • The Whitehall expansion will allow Ashley to move into a new product category for the Wisconsin operations: mattress manufacturing. This will add stability to Ashley’s workforce.
    • Ashley has refurbished a new facility in Independence, Wisconsin for low melt fiber production and this operation will begin in October, 2014.
    • Ashley has invested millions of dollars into new manufacturing and warehousing equipment in its Wisconsin operations.
    • Ashley continues to grow its IT infrastructure and is launching web sales in 2015. This expansion will create new high tech and customer service jobs.
    • This growth and investments will add more Wisconsin jobs.
  • Ashley provides health care insurance, retirement plans, a fully staffed medical facility and offers availability of prescription drugs free of charge to its employees.
  • Ashley’s pay system involves both base rates and incentives, the incentives and base rates have to be added together to arrive at the actual wage rate. The “ACTUAL” average wage for Ashley’s direct labor employees is over $16 per hour.
  • All money Ashley receives from the proposed WEDC incentives will be fully donated to the City of Arcadia to make its flood control project possible. The flood control project will benefit all business owners and residents that are located in lower Arcadia.
While Ashley Furniture is committed to Wisconsin, public flood control projects are the responsibility of government, not private individuals or businesses. Nonetheless, Ashley, acting as a good Samaritan, has been willing to guarantee investing a minimum of $34,900,000 so the City of Arcadia can receive the money required to complete the City of Arcadia’s flood control project.

How will this be done?
  • The Myers Valley Creek Flood Control Project- related costs are estimated, based on information provided to Ashley, to be over six million dollars ($6,000,000).
  • The City of Arcadia does not have six million dollars ($6,000,000). In fact, its borrowing capacity is limited to approximately two million dollars ($2,000,000) and the city needs to reserve these funds for emergencies.
  • Ashley, at the City of Arcadia’s request, applied to the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation for the money required for the City’s flood control project.
  • Ashley has committed to the city that it will donate 100% of all funds it receives from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation as a result of its recent incentive application to the City of Arcadia for its Myers Valley Creek Flood Control Project.
What does the Myers Valley Creek flood control project do?
  • It will allow the City of Arcadia and the State of Wisconsin to protect Wisconsin jobs and create the opportunities for more jobs. It is unreasonable to expect Ashley to continue to invest and create additional jobs in a high flood risk area. Criticizing Ashley for not taking unacceptable risks is absurd. We need to grow Wisconsin jobs and not place them in jeopardy.
Is money from the State of Wisconsin or the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation free?
  • Absolutely not, these incentives have to be earned. Most of them are tax incentives. What do tax incentives require? It is simple: grow your business and pay more taxes. If you do both, the state refunds a part of your tax payments back to you. When you then donate this money for a public purpose, this should be applauded and not criticized for a political purpose.

Locally Launched Charitable Program Provides Free Beds for Kids—in London
September 09, 2014
Members of Ashley Furniture HomeStore and the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars are back home after hosting the first ever “A Hope to Dream” Stadium Sleepover at London’s famed Wembley Stadium on Saturday night, August 30, 2014. The Ashley/Jaguars teams treated 100 children and their chaperones to an unforgettable night that included a dance party with Jaguars’ mascot Jaxson de Ville and the Jaguars’ “THE ROAR” cheerleading squad. The night included a feast donated by Papa John’s Pizza and Pepsi-Cola. While at the stadium, the children played with XBOX sets provided by Microsoft. The biggest thrill of the night came when the Ashley Furniture HomeStore team announced that free beds would be delivered to 100 underprivileged children in London the next day.

Ashley Furniture HomeStore-Jacksonville CEO and Managing Member Howard Fineman said this one-of-a-kind event is just another step in realizing Ashley’s vision for “A Hope to Dream”; that all children have their very own beds. “Too many children live their lives without being able to count on this one critical building block of life—a good night’s sleep. I am so proud that our team has come together with the Jacksonville Jaguars and delivered a fun-filled event that speaks so dramatically to our vision.”

The global expansion of the “A Hope to Dream” program to London grew from the inaugural Stadium Sleepover hosted by Fineman and Jacksonville Jaguars Head Coach Gus Bradley and his wife Michaela last year. Last month, Ashley Furniture HomeStore and the Jaguars teamed up for the second time at Everbank Field and treated 100 local children to the all-night event. Bradley said the program is one he and his family are proud to embrace. “As an NFL football coach I know firsthand the importance of a healthy body and healthy mind. It requires good nutrition and exercise; but it all starts with a good night’s rest. “A Hope to Dream” has brought a good night’s sleep to thousands of children and I can tell you that our Jaguars’ family and the Bradley family are honored to be a part of it.” Ashley Furniture HomeStore worked directly with the United Kingdom’s NFL Jaguars group to bring the project to life. In a statement released to Jacksonville, Florida local media two weeks earlier, Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan added that the synergy of the partnership between the Jaguars and Ashley Furniture HomeStore is a perfect example of how something started in Jacksonville can serve people in London and the rest of the world.

Fineman says he’s delighted to share the story of the Stadium Sleepover in London. “In today’s world, speedy travel and global communication through the internet have enhanced the meaning of the word ‘community.’ I want all Ashley Furniture HomeStore customers to feel the happiness of these children, to see their smiles and feel their parents’ joy and gratitude. After all, it is Ashley customers everywhere who make it possible to bring “A Hope to Dream” to life in cities and towns throughout America, and now, across the ocean.” Fineman adds that he credits the program’s success to Ashley Furniture HomeStore customers because a portion of the proceeds of every purchase of a mattress at a local Ashley Furniture HomeStore pays for a mattress set for a child in need. Families who need beds are nominated by friends, family and social service agencies. The “A Hope to Dream” program launched with Howard Fineman’s Ashley Furniture HomeStore in Jacksonville in 2010. Since then the program has donated more than 13,000 Ashley Sleep mattress sets to children in need.

One Week Left before Ashley’s ‘A Hope to Dream’ Goes Global
August 23, 2014
Ashley Furniture HomeStore-Jacksonville reported that only a few last minute details remain before members of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Ashley Furniture HomeStore teams head to London. The two organizations will fly to Great Britain next week to host the first ever Stadium Sleepover at London’s famed Wembley Stadium. 100 children in need will spend the night at Wembley on August 30 to take part in Ashley Furniture HomeStore’s first “A Hope to Dream” sleepover outside of the United States. The next morning, the beds donated by the company will be delivered to the children’s homes.

“The Ashley Furniture HomeStore team is so excited to take ‘A Hope to Dream’ to children in Great Britain. This is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate what can be achieved in your city, your nation, and around the world if we all work together,” said Howard Fineman, CEO and Managing Member of Ashley Furniture HomeStore-Jacksonville. “Ashley Furniture and Ashley Furniture HomeStores have a strong history of giving back, and we are excited by the growth of the ‘A Hope To Dream’ program throughout the United States, and now internationally.”

The first of its kind event in London is an expansion of the program that started last year in Jacksonville, Florida. On August 1, 2014, Ashley Furniture HomeStores-Jacksonville hosted the second annual “A Hope to Dream” Stadium Sleepover at the Jaguars home stadium, EverBank Field. 100 children who did not have beds of their own joined Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley, his wife Michaela, and Ashley Furniture HomeStore team members for a party and sleepover. The next morning, the beds were delivered to the children’s homes.

The expansion of the program to London supports Jaguars’ owner Shad Khan’s vision of sports and community. “You talk about synergy and sharing of really good ideas; I mean, this is a great example of that. There are many ideas – you know, great ideas – in London that we can embrace and serve the community, but this is a perfect example. Something that started here, can serve people - in London and the rest of the world,” said Shad about the ‘A Hope to Dream” program.

Representatives from the Jaguars and Ashley Furniture HomeStore-Jacksonville will fly to London on August 29, 2014.

Ashley Furniture HomeStore #1 in the Top 25 Furniture and Bedding Retailers
August 20, 2014
The nation's Top 25 furniture and bedding retailers grew sales by 6% last year, which may be a reflection of the growing strength of e-commerce players nipping at their heels and contraction in some non-traditional furniture store sectors.

The combined group of retailers grew 2013 furniture and bedding sales to $30.7 billion from $29 billion for the Top 25 the year before, which was the same group of stores. That percentage growth was less than the 7.8% sales uptick for Furniture/Today's combined Top 100 furniture stores, which includes some of the same retailers on this list, and it also fell behind the 10.8% sales growth that the Top 25 experienced in 2012 over 2011.

Ashley Furniture HomeStores, the dedicated network of licensed and corporate-owned stores, topped the list for the fifth straight year with a 6% increase in furniture and bedding sales to $3 billion.

Furniture/Today's exclusive Top 25 Retailers ranks the leading U.S. furniture and bedding retailers by 2013 sales of furniture and bedding. Data is based on fiscal years ended Dec. 31, unless otherwise noted. Decorative accessory sales, including lamps, area rugs, wall décor and mirrors, are excluded in the estimates. Decorative accessory sales were included in the Top 100 U.S. Furniture Stores Ranking, published in Furniture/Today's May 19, 2014, issue.

All sales figures, except those of publicly held companies which break out furniture and bedding sales as a separate line of business, are Furniture/Today market research estimates.

Sales estimates were derived from a variety of sources, including the companies themselves, public company filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, discussions with industry analysts and suppliers and published and unpublished reports, including newspaper articles in various retailing areas.

This ranking is by no means comprehensive and does not represent the entire industry. More than the 25 retailers listed are vital companies within the industry. Furniture/Today chooses not to include some companies due to lack of verification of sales figures.

The Top 25 crosses all formats of furniture and bedding retailing. Channels include Bedding specialty stores (Mattress Firm, Sleepy's, Sleep Number); Department stores (Macy's, Inc.); Discount department stores (Walmart, Target, Big Lots); Lifestyle furniture stores (Ikea, Williams-Sonoma, Restoration Hardware); Manufacturer-branded stores (Ashley Furniture HomeStores, La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries, Ethan Allen); Office supply stores (Staples, Office Depot); Rental stores (Rent-A-Center, Aaron’s); Traditional furniture stores (Rooms To Go, Berkshire Hathaway furniture division, Raymour & Flanigan, American Signature, Bob's Discount Furniture, Haverty's); and Warehouse membership clubs (Costco, Sam's Club).

Three New Global Companies Sign On To Help Take Local "A Hope to Dream" Project Overseas
August 18, 2014
Ashley Furniture HomeStore-Jacksonville and the Jacksonville Jaguars have gained the attention of Pepsi-Cola, Papa John’s and XBOX to help support their first ever “A Hope to Dream” Stadium Sleepover in London, England.

On August 30, 100 children and their chaperones from London will spend the night at Great Britain’s famed Wembley Stadium sleeping in beds donated by Jacksonville’s Ashley Furniture HomeStore. While at the stadium, the children will play on gaming consoles provided by XBOX. Members of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars cheerleading squad, THE ROAR, will also host a dance party for the children after they enjoy the pizza and drinks donated by Pepsi-Cola and Papa John’s Pizza. The next morning, the beds will be delivered to the homes of the children who previously did not have a bed of their own.

This first-of-its-kind experience at Wembley is an expansion of the event started last year in Jacksonville, Florida. The next morning, the beds were also delivered to the children’s homes.

Jacksonville Jaguars Head Coach Gus Bradley and his family are enormous supporters of the program. “The ‘A Hope to Dream’ program is such a blessing to these children. But once you see these kids with their new beds, you’re quick to realize the blessing is really ours.”

Ashley Furniture HomeStore-Jacksonville CEO and Managing Member Howard Fineman said taking “A Hope to Dream” to London is one more important step forward for the program. “Today, we live in a global community where each of us has the chance to make a difference to all of our neighbors—around our city or around the world. In this case, we are honored to have the opportunity to extend our support of the Jacksonville Jaguars as they expand their fan base overseas. In doing so, we make a life-changing difference by helping 100 children in need dream big in their very own ‘A Hope to Dream’ bed.”

Fineman added that since Ashley Furniture HomeStore is the number one selling furniture store brand in the world, in addition to the number one retailer of furniture and bedding here in the United States, expanding the “A Hope to Dream” charitable initiative outside of the United States is the next logical milestone.

The Jacksonville Jaguars and Ashley Furniture HomeStore teams leave for London August 29th to welcome the children to Wembley the next day.

Pursuit of a Cure benefits Three Additional Charities
July 7, 2014
ARCADIA, Wis. – The annual Pursuit of a Cure 5K (and Miracle Mile) Run-Walk charity event will be held on Friday, August 8th at Memorial Park during the opening night of Ashley for the Arts. Pursuit of a Cure acts as a fundraiser to advance cancer medical research and help offset the medical-related costs that cancer patients incur. The American Cancer Society (ACS) will be joined by the Rita Tranberg Memorial, Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) Mission and Christ Lutheran Church as the primary recipients of the funds raised by this event. The Rita Tranberg Memorial, OLPH Mission and Christ Lutheran Church will have ‘Pursuit of a Cure’ funds that focus solely on providing financial aid to local cancer patients.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) will continue to be the sole national beneficiary from this event, to assist in their ongoing cancer research. “Here in Trempealeau County, funds dedicated to the American Cancer Society through the Pursuit of a Cure Run/Walk event are making an impact on many lives” said Lori Francis, ACS’s Community Events Specialist. “From making possible the vital American Cancer Society programs and services that support those in our community facing a diagnosis, to life-changing cancer research and medical discovery, to advocacy for access to quality health care for everyone affected by cancer, the money raised through this event is helping further the vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays.”

The Pursuit of a Cure event committee decided to invite additional organizations to participate in the event after receiving feedback from past event participants asking that some funds raised solely to assist cancer patients who are having difficulty paying for their cancer treatments, including gas and medical costs.

Kathy Bisek, a Pursuit of a Cure committee member, said “As a member of the run/walk committee for several years, and being a cancer survivor myself, I know how important the American Cancer Society's work is. But I also think keeping some funds locally to be able to help people financially that are going through treatment is equally important. So I hope people will embrace this new concept.”

The Pursuit of a Cure event has grown dramatically each year since it was scheduled on the first day (Friday) of the two-day Ashley for the Arts in 2012. This year, The Beach Boys are scheduled to perform on Friday.

So how will this work?

All race participants that register on race day will be required to select the organization they wish to support. The registration fee will be: $20 on the day of the event and will include an admission wristband for the two-day Ashley for the Arts event. There is an option to pre-register and save money by registering online at: before August 2, 2014 which will amount to $17.25. Teams will no longer be required to fundraise for the event as in previous years. However, anyone who wishes to donate over and above their entry fee can do so at the event by:
  1. Writing a larger check to the organization they choose to support.
  2. Providing a basket raffle item.
Also, any extra money raised by teams prior to the event can be donated to the organization of their choice on the day of the event. It is the wish of the Pursuit of a Cure committee to formally recognize at the closing ceremony the efforts of exceptional individual teams and contributors to this worthy cause.

The committee welcomes anyone who is interested in participating on the Pursuit of a Cure committee, but most importantly, applauds everyone for their efforts in supporting this life changing initiative.

Ashley Furniture HomeStore to open in former Sportsman’s Warehouse site on East Kellogg
July 2, 2014
Ashley Furniture HomeStore is planning to open a second Wichita location.

Wichita Furniture Inc., the parent company of Ashley Furniture HomeStore-Wichita and Furniture on Consignment, is buying the 55,000-square-foot building at 11645 E. Kellogg, a site that most recently housed Sportsman’s Warehouse.

Sportsman’s Warehouse opened in that location in 2006, but closed about four years ago.

The site will be converted to an Ashley HomeStore showroom, and the store is expected to open this fall.

The Sportsman’s Warehouse signs on the building were removed Wednesday.

In 2002, Ashley Furniture opened its first Wichita HomeStore, that one near 21st Street North and Maize Road.

There are 500 Ashley Furniture HomeStore locations worldwide.

Serta wins top Women’s Choice Award in bedding. Restonic, Reverie, Sealy, Ashley Furniture HomeStores also honored
July 2, 2014
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — WomenCertified Inc. has named its 2014 Women’s Choice Award recipients, honoring Serta as the most recommended bedding brand.

Bedding sources Restonic and Reverie also were recognized, with WomenCertified saying they were recommended by nine out of 10 female customers.

Ashley Furniture HomeStores was the only furniture store to win the award, and Sealy won for its baby crib mattresses and bedding. Several other companies were recognized for other goods and services, which WomenCertified says is based on surveys of thousands of women as well as research conducted in partnership with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

“It is truly an honor to be recognized as the most recommended mattress, box spring and pillow brand with the 2014 Women’s Choice Award,” said Andrew Gross, senior vice president of marketing for Serta. “Serta has been leading the way in product innovation for more than 80 years, and it means a great deal to us that women continue to trust our brand to bring them more comfort and a better sleep experience.”

“The Women’s Choice Award mission is to raise awareness among consumers about which brands are most recommended and trusted by women,” said Delia Passi, CEO and founder of the awards.

The award doesn’t just signify that these brands have women’s favor — it signifies that women are willing to recommend them to others, according to Passi.

“When a woman is willing to stake her reputation on a recommendation, it means that business has earned her loyalty. Those are the businesses we wish to recognize for their efforts and commitment to the No. 1 consumer — women,” she said. Click here to learn more.

'A Hope to Dream' adding program in London
June 25, 2014
The Jacksonville Jaguars and Ashley Furniture HomeStores-Jacksonville will partner to expand Ashley Furniture HomeStores “A Hope to Dream” program to 100 children in London.

Last year, Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley along with his wife, Michaela, and their children teamed with Howard Fineman, CEO and managing member of Jacksonville’s Ashley Furniture HomeStore,s to host a sleepover for 50 children at the Jaguars’ Everbank Field home. The children ate pizza with football players and participated in a dance party led by the Roar cheerleading squad. The children later learned the beds they were sleeping in that night would go home with them the next day.

Bradley and Fineman worked the past year to expand the program. Both organizations will host the second annual “A Hope to Dream” sleepover Aug. 1 in Jacksonville and have agreed to expand the program to aid children in London who need beds.

Representatives of both the Jaguars and Ashley Furniture HomeStores-Jacksonville will fly to London to host an Aug. 30 sleepover at Wembley Stadium for 100 children.

“As a coach, I know a good night’s sleep is the critical building block to good health and to having a hope of achieving in life,” Bradley said. “My wife and my children and I were just overcome with emotion at last year’s sleepover. You have never seen such joy as when we told those children that from now on they would sleep in a bed — in their own bed — and the chance to expand the program to our fans in London — it’s the definition of being a servant leader and it’s going to be amazing.”

Davie's big deal: How the county landed and nearly lost the Ashley Furniture plant
June 20, 2014
Ashley Furniture Industries is set to complete its 2.7 million-square-foot mid-Atlantic manufacturing and distribution hub in Davie County by October. It already employs 400 people.

On a sunny spring morning, Ron Wanek, founder of Ashley Furniture Industries Inc., rode in a vehicle past a blur of buildings abuzz with construction activity at the massive Davie County site that will soon be home to the Arcadia, Wis.-based company's completed mid-Atlantic distribution and manufacturing center.

At first glance, the Ashley construction site looks like it never confronted any obstacles or delays.

The $80 million facility was teeming with Shelco LLC construction workers wearing hard-hats. Massive cranes pierced the blue sky and drivers in tractors helped complete a more than 1 million-square-foot addition to a former R.J Reynolds Tobacco Co. facility. At a small office in the front of the Ashley site, candidates hoping for one of the hundreds of jobs that Ashley has been adding waited for interviews. And Wanek's sunny disposition was on display as he jumped out of a vehicle during a tour of the site to say hello to Ashley workers. Click here to learn more.

June 19, 2014
The National Football League’s Jacksonville Jaguars and Ashley Furniture HomeStores-Jacksonville announced they will partner to expand Ashley Furniture HomeStores “A Hope to Dream” program to 100 children in London, England. Last year, Jaguars Coach Gus Bradley, his wife Michaela and their children, teamed with Howard Fineman, CEO and Managing Member of Jacksonville’s Ashley Furniture HomeStores to host a sleepover for 50 children at the Jaguars Everbank Field home. The children enjoyed everything from pizza with football players to a dance party led by the Jaguars’ ROAR cheerleading squad. The children were stunned to learn that the beds they were sleeping in that night would go home with them the next day.

Bradley and Fineman and their respective team members were so overwhelmed by the response to the sleepover and the bed giveaway that for the past year they’ve worked on their dream to expand the program. There's no magic secret to Ashley Furniture's growth
June 18, 2014
At the height of the recession, Ashley Furniture Homestore was one of six furniture companies in the U.S. that had sales growth.

That growth, along with the continued decline of competitors, allowed Dufresne Spencer Group, Ashley Furniture’s parent company, to acquire smaller furniture stores that were going out of business. Since opening its first store in 2003 in Jackson, Tenn., DSG has grown Ashley to 35 stores in nine states, helping DSG grow revenue nearly 34 percent in 2013, compared to 2012.

If DSG considers another acquisition, however, it must fit into the company's strategy.

“If you look at our states, we’re succinct geographically,” Chad Spencer, president of DSG, said. “Does it make sense to buy a store in Oregon? No, but we’ve looked at it.” Click here to learn more.

At Ashley Furniture Industries Environmental Stewardship begins at home...
Ashley Donates Trees to Local Communities
May 28, 2014
ARCADIA, Wis. – Ashley Furniture Industries, Inc. (Ashley) donated 114 trees to the Arcadia community. Ashley also plans to donate an additional 28 trees to the City of Independence - at the request of Mayor Robert “Ottie” Baecker - as part of its State Highway 93 reconstruction project.

Rollie Conrad, Arcadia Street Superintendent, and his team once again are taking the lead in planting and watering these trees. The recent tree donation in Arcadia was comprised of Maple, Elm, Lilac, Arborvitae, Spruce, Fir, Pine, and Walnut trees. These were planted on the Arcadia High School, Schank Park and Wanek Art Center grounds. Arcadia High School students also participated in planting the trees as a community service to their hometown.

“Trees serve many functions. They are obviously great for the environment, provide shade in the summer, and beauty to the landscape. It’s wonderful when the community embraces this concept,” says Ron Wanek, Founder and Chairman of Ashley Furniture Industries, Inc. “Arcadia has such beauty and you can really feel it come alive in the summertime.”

In addition, studies show that adding trees increases a property’s resale value and can increase a business’s foot traffic and revenue by as much as 20 percent.

Ashley Furniture’s President and CEO, Todd Wanek said, “Rollie Conrad and the Arcadia Street Department are a great asset to Arcadia. They have taken it upon themselves to make our parks the envy of the region.”

Mayor John Kimmel echoed Todd Wanek’s statement. “Rollie and his team take pride in showcasing Arcadia’s parks to our residents and visitors each year. They go above and beyond each and every day and it shows.”

Conrad and his team are responsible for maintaining the grounds of Arcadia’s 54-acre Memorial Park. Arcadia’s Park and Recreation department is responsible for maintaining its flower beds. Ron Wanek was the lead benefactor and architect of this park, which serves many community functions, but is most known for Soldiers Walk, the premier war memorial in the United States outside of Washington, D.C. The Arcadia Street Department also maintains the grounds of seven additional parks in Arcadia. In total, there are over 100 acres and 1000 trees in Arcadia’s parks.

In addition to supplying trees to local communities for more than 25 years, Ashley donates 25,000 trees to its employees each year in celebration of Arbor Day.

When Mom wants a sofa…

One of the great things about not being famous is anonymity — the type of anonymity that allows one to walk into a furniture retail store to take a look at what’s on the floor and to experience customer service firsthand. These unscheduled excursions offer a rare opportunity for those of us immersed in the furniture business to put on a different hat and see the world of furniture from the consumer’s viewpoint, often illuminating why some stores continue to perform well even when consumers are reigning in their spending. ‘The Beach Boys’ and ‘Ingrid Michaelson’ headline Ashley for the Arts
April 16, 2014
ARCADIA, Wis. – Ashley for the Arts ( announced today that ‘The Beach Boys’ will headline its annual music and art festival on Friday, August 8th. The iconic band – with the world’s favorite soundtrack to summer - continues to hold Billboard / Nielsen SoundScan’s record as the top-selling American band for albums and singles, and the most Billboard Top 40 chart hits (36).

Ingrid Michaelson will headline the festival on Saturday, August 9th. Since her debut in 2005, she has vaulted from overachieving indie-pop sweetheart to a bona-fide pop star with numerous resounding songwriting achievements, including her platinum break-out single, “The Way I Am”. Michaelson released her fifth studio album "Lights Out" on April 15th. “Lights Out” is anchored by the swelling pop-affirmation "Time Machine" and the sweetly buoyant "Girls Chase Boys." Her last album release, "Human Again," debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard album chart (plus No.1 on iTunes).

Incredibly, the cost of admission for the two-day charity event will remain just five dollars.

Ashley for the Arts will also feature musical performances by Cloud Cult, on the heels of its full length live acoustic album "Unplug" released on April 15th; Country newcomer American Young; Midwest festival favorite Johnny Holm Band, six-time Grammy Nominee “John McCutcheon”, Latin Grammy Nominee “Alacranes Musical”, The Memories, The Riverbenders, Big River Radio Wave, Anna Johnson Band, Roamin’ California, Russell Lachney Band, The Mondays, Chicos Kumbia and Herederos de Oaxaca.

The Beach Boys are led by founding Beach Boy Mike Love (lead vocals) and Bruce Johnston (vocals/keyboards), who are joined by Christian Love (guitar/vocals), Randell Kirsch (bass/vocals), Tim Bonhomme (keyboards/vocals), John Cowsill (percussion /vocals) and Scott Totten (guitar/vocals). Love’s role as the band’s front man sometimes overshadows his stature as one of rock’s foremost songwriters. “Surfin’,” The Beach Boys’ first hit came from his pen. With his cousin, Brian Wilson, Love wrote the classics “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around,” “Help Me Rhonda,” “California Girls” and the Grammy nominated “Good Vibrations.” Years later, he showed he still had the lyrical chops by co-writing the irresistible and chart-topping “Kokomo.” The Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

Music performances will also be provided by local schools, including Arcadia, Whitehall, G-E-T, Blair-Taylor, and Independence. For their participation, each school receives a donation. Louis Ferguson, superintendent of Arcadia’s School District, explained, “Ashley is a special company and this is an extraordinary event.”

Friday night will once again feature a 5K run/walk called, “Pursuit of a Cure” – benefitting the American Cancer Society and local organizations that provide financial assistance to patients who struggle to pay for cancer treatments.

Ashley for the Arts also acts as a fundraiser for an all-volunteer non-profit organization called, “Ashley’s Angels”. Ashley’s Angels provides food, clothing, blankets, and special gift requests to children in need at Christmas.

The event also serves as a fundraising platform for Communities Off n’ Funning, a Trempealeau-based organization that was established to help communities get active. Due to popular demand, Communities Off n’ Funning will once again be organizing a children’s obstacle course as part of this year’s event.

On top of that, the Arcadia Lions and Lioness Clubs serve food for fundraising purposes.

Although Ashley for the Arts was conceptualized and established by Ashley owners Todd and Ron Wanek, several other companies, including GNP (Gold’n Plump) and Pehler Trucking, were enamored by the initiative and offered to become major sponsors to help pay for the event.

The level of interest in sponsoring and volunteering for the event prompted the Waneks’ decision to convert Ashley for the Arts from an Ashley initiative into an official non-profit organization. Even as Ashley for the Arts takes on a life of its own, the Waneks vow to remain generous supporters of the organization and the event that bears their company’s name. Todd Wanek said, “I’m humbled by the amount of interest in this initiative and am extremely pleased to see that it is being embraced by our communities and schools. I’m also proud of the work of the volunteers involved in this event. They do a world of good.”

Among his many philanthropic contributions, Ron Wanek, Ashley’s founder and chairman, is the lead benefactor of Memorial Park (, which serves as the backdrop for the event. The 54-acre park features Soldier’s Walk, widely recognized as one of the country’s premier war memorials. Two miles of walkways link different areas of the park, including all event attractions, and food and beverage booths. Featured pieces of local art and history decorate the walkways, showcasing some of the region’s most talented and heroic contributors.

Ruby Frazier, 8, can now get the quality sleep she needs to scores well in school.

"I think it's very squishy and soft," Ruby said. "And I really like the pillows."

She was one of 50 children who were surprised with a brand new bed.

"It's awesome to be a part of this program 'Hope to Dream," said Bonner.

The Spurs teamed up with the charity "Hope to Dream" to give away beds to needy children. Ashley Furniture HomeStore raised the money. For every mattress sold, $5 was donated to provide the mattress sets.

"Many of them never had a bed of their own before," said Jennifer Casanova, a spokeswoman for Ashley Furniture HomeStore.

She said a good night's rest can make a big difference for their future.

Ashley Furniture Industries hopes to finish Davie plant expansion in October
March 20, 2014
Ashley Furniture Industries Inc. expects to complete the expansion of its Davie County manufacturing and distribution center in October, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.

The company broke ground in April 2013on a more than 1-million-square-foot expansion to add space for distribution. The expansion adds to Ashley’s existing 1.7 million-square-foot facility -- which used to be R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. warehouses -- that opened in November.

Ashley officials had expected the project would be completed within the year.

But a rainy summer, the discovery of four acres of wetlands and costs associated with adhering to new state building codes have led to delays that the company has previously estimated added $40 million to the initial $80 million price tag.

The plant has about 300 fulltime workers and plans to hire about 200 more by the end of the year, according to the Journal. Employment at the facility is expected to eventually reach 1,000. Click here to learn more.

Ashley Furniture Industries expects N.C. distribution center to be in business in October
March 19, 2014
ADVANCE, N.C. — Ashley Furniture Chairman Ron Wanek updated local leaders on construction of a planned 1.1 million-square-foot distribution center here, saying it’s now expecting to be up and running in October, the Winston-Salem Journal reported.

Ashley broke ground in spring 2013 on the facility, which has been plagued by delays, primarily from poor weather and the discovery of wetlands on the property. Previously the completion date was pushed back to the middle of this year.

The Journal also noted that the equipment for the new distribution center will be installed beginning in April, and when the facility is completed, manufacturing lines will moved into areas of existing buildings here that the company currently is using for distribution operations.

Ashley has some manufacturing operations, primarily upholstery, already running in existing space, and expects to add case goods production in September, Wanek told the paper. Click here to learn more.
